Let’s Clean the Bow!
What if your kids or grandkids couldn’t enjoy the Bow River like you do today? What if in 50 years the Bow River habitat such as our world class fishing were non-existent?
It’s been 40 years since the Bow River and Pathway clean-up began and it’s time this year to get involved. You can make an important difference for the next generation by volunteering for three hours this May 6th.
The first river clean-up began in the spring of 1967. Twelve year-old Sandra Crawford was walking along the bank and saw an entire mattress in the river. She tried to pull it out on her own but failed. She wrote a letter to the Calgary Herald decrying the mess.
You can be a part of creating a better future in this anniversary year of the clean-up. You can register yourself on the city of Calgary website or you can be a part of a group from the south part of Calgary.
To register alone go to calgary.ca/parks where you’ll find the registration information.
To be a part of an organized group where you’ll work on a part of the Bow in the south end of the city, log on to canyoncreek.ca.
You will need to attend an orientation session prior to volunteering, the dates of which are on the websites. Canyon Creek Christian Fellowship is the sponsor of the group project and they will offer a playground clean-up for kids ages 5-11. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to help in the clean-up due to insurance and safety reasons. As well, there will be babysitting offered for kids ages 1-4 so parents can participate in the Bow clean-up.
A hot dog lunch for all will follow the clean-up to celebrate. As Calgarians we’ve long been proud of our Bow River. Let’s keep that pride alive by volunteering on May 6th to keep our river beautiful for future generations.
For further information on the group project in south Calgary log-on to canyoncreek.ca or call Rick or Courtney at 256-3167. You can also call the city of Calgary at 311 for questions not answered on the city’s website.
