Be part of a life-changing, world-changing event - The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. During one amazing weekend, you will unite with thousands of women and men to walk 60 kilometres on The Road to Victory over this disease. You’ll raise at least $2,000 to benefit the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. And in one weekend, you will do something amazing. You will make a change in yourself, in your community and in the world. Take that first step on The Road to Victory and join the Bustin' Mamas!

endcancer.ca/goto/Bustinmamas Registration is only $75

The Weekend to End Breast Cancer: Three days of achievements
Day Zero (Friday) Time to check-in, turn in your donations, get your tent assignment and meet your fellow Walkers.

Day One (Saturday) We’ll commemorate those we've lost and celebrate the lives we’re saving during the Opening Ceremony at sunrise. Then it’s time to walk 30 beautiful kilometres! Afterwards at Camp, you can enjoy a relaxing massage, medical TLC if you need it, a hot shower, a hot meal, a little entertainment, and a campout.

Day Two (Sunday) After breakfast, you’ll knock out another 30km on the way to the finish line, where your family, friends and a cheering crowd await. Then, the Closing Ceremony will honour what you and your fellow Walkers have just done in the fight to end breast cancer.

Crazy question, but I assume you have to camp out? You can't go home for the night? That is the only thing that is holding me back. What would the crew do? Maybe I could do that.

I just know that there is no way that I will sleep outside. Yes, I know I will be exhausted but with my insomnia that never matters. Thanks for the offer, but unless I can go home and sleep in my bed it will not work for me. I am a baby.

it was a life changing event for me.

I went in thinking ahhh...it'll be fun. It was fun, but also inspiring and eye opening. One of the hardest things I have ever done (seriously thought I was going to die on Saturday night but woke up sunday morning raring and ready to go) the sheer number of people - the lady who was 9 months pregnant (walking to get baby out), the man in the wheelchair, the woman in the wheelchair, cheers and support from the walkers, the crew and even people on the streets - waving flags from cars, from their lawns.

The older woman standing on her front lawn with a sign saying thank you. Children cheering "go mom!" it didn't only apply to their mom but ALL the moms.

And then you get over that hill and see the roundup centre - you are a km away but can already hear the cheers. Walk through the lot the people lined to cheer on moms, sisters, daughters, and the guys walking. Kids flying out of that line up into their mama's arms. The fellow walkers cheering you into the round up centre tears and hugs and relief. Then you become a part of that reception for those behind you.

The closing ceremony was amazing. Exhausted barely standing but able to stand and cheer for what we have accomplished. Onto one knee for the survivors - celebrate their strength and courage. Their perserverance in making it to the end.

I'm seriously thinking hard about this. I would absolutely love to do this!!!

I'm waiting to hear back from my family as to their holiday schedule cause this falls about the time when we all meet in Sask, at our family cabin.

I'll keep you posted Christine.

they'll be releasing the name of the host hotel closer to the event for safety reasons. but they do give a discount rate to the walkers.

FYI...you DO NOT need to camp!!

My first year walking I camped, but last year I came home and slept in my very own comfy bed. It was great!

I think if you were to NOT camp, that you should still hang out at camp for a bit and take in the atmosphere! It truly is amazing and is absolutely a huge part of the experience of it all.

:D

Thanks for the info. I will talk to DH tonight and I am pretty sure I will do it. My reasons are two fold. First to help such a wonderful cause and second to give me a reason to get in shape.

boogalooz

funny thing is you don't really need to be in absolute perfect shape. its the stamina thats the kicker....and being able to push through summer heat.

I talked to DH last night and he helped me see reality. As much as I would love to do the walk, there is no way my legs will let me. I have big problems with my legs and blood vessels. I can barely stand on my feet for 3-4 hours let alone walk 10 hours a day. I think I may be able to handle becoming a member of the crew and of course I would like to continue helping where I can. Sorry:)

boogalooz
01-16-2008, 12:57 PM
don't be sorry sue!

I think the crew worked harder than the walkers actually...all we had to do was walk.

but you can indeed join the team as a crew member. Thats what Danielle (danderson) is doing this year.

I did it! I signed up to be a member of the crew. Still a little upset that I can't walk but I am happy I can still participate this way. Just got to figure out howto use the site and start my fundraising!

You know that is what holds me back too, that and I am scared I won't make up the money needed. I am not very assertive when it comes to money.

that was my HUGE fear from last year. It is a LOT of money, but once you get going its surprisingly easy. Easier as a team too. On your own is really hard.

I am going to seriously think about being a crew member as I don't think I'll be able to handle the walk. My due date is June 30, so don't know where I'll be at and I won't be able to train all that hard.

This sounds like it's an awesome experience.

Geez...this almost brought tears to my eyes reading this. I have always wanted to participate in this (back in Vancouver). I would love to do it here.....I'm going to chat with a girlfriend and see if she'll do it with me too - how many people can join the group? When do we have to join by?

Well seeing as there's the $2000 fundraising minimum, you may want to consider joining sooner rather than later so that you have more time to join us in our fundraisers and email your friends and family and whatnot... :) Leaving it too close will make it really hard!!

You could always do Crew. That is only $500 if you can raise it. That way you are still involved and helping a good cause. Danielle and I would love to hang with you!

Honestly? It's hot! But it never fails to amaze me how much the surrounding communites will do to cheer you on and keep you moving! There are kids sitting at the ends of their driveways with HUGE boxes of freezies, cutting the ends off and handing them to the walkers, people set their sprinklers up and aim them at the sidewalk so the walkers can walk through them, little kids with lemonade stands (SOOOO cute), people sitting on their lawn with hoses, ready to soak you from head to toe as long as you want it...etc.

Yes, it's hot. But it is manageable!!

Aaw! That is awesome! Well, I just got off the phone with my best friend who (ironically - but not really as we have this weird "connection") has been thinking of doing it over the last couple days and told herself this morning that she was going to do it....so she said we could do it either in Calgary or Vancouver, my choice....so I just have to decide now....hhhmm.... :scratch2:

join the team! have your friend join the team! no need to be a calgarymom to join!

it was really freakin hot!~ I seriously thought I was going to die...but then came around a corner to a family handing out ice water, frozen sponges, and watermelon. the sprinklers, people giving water, even the sports medicine centre (by mcmahon) was out filling bottles with gatorade for people. There are sweep vans with water and assistance if you need (they usually had super soakers too...). and the pit stops/check points were quite close together - they made absolutely sure as you were leaving those that you had drank, eaten and peed. and had enough with you. I had a 2L camelback backpack and a water bottle - that kept me going from one stop to the next.

as long as you took the advice and drank lots, peed lots and let them baby you - it was all good. there were a few really hard spots but then a sweeper van would blow by horns a blarin.

oh and for those that don't know me....

I DESPISE THE SUMMER HEAT! so if I can do it....ANYONE can!
